Welcome to the Val du Charron/Wamakersvallei
Cradled in the Valley of the Wagonmakers, sheltered by the majestic Hawequa Mountains and surrounded by bountiful vineyards, orchards, olive groves and buchu plantations, lies the charming, historic town of Wellington. First settled by French Huguenot refugees in the late 1600s, Wellington is often referred to as the Boland’s best-kept secret. It is also the warm, hospitable heart of the acclaimed Cape wine region, famed for its scenic countryside and venerable estates, dotted with gracious Cape Dutch homesteads. The neighbouring towns of Paarl, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Tulbagh are all within easy driving distance, as is the West Coast, with Cape Town International Airport a mere 45 minutes away.
Award-winning wines, brandies & natural attractions
Well-known for award-winning wines and pot-still brandies, Wellington offers diverse unique attractions, including guided wine-walks and horse-trails through lush farmland and pristine nature. Just beyond the town, the spectacular Bain’s Kloof Pass beckons, with its breathtaking vistas, enticing streams and rock pools, and beautiful, indigenous fynbos.
Sport & culture
Wellington is also home to the Boland Rugby Stadium, and the Breytenbach Centre and Bordienghuis Theatre (former home of celebrated poet, Breyten Breytenbach, now a cultural and creative hub). Long a significant educational centre, Wellington is also the site of a picturesque CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) campus.
Apart from being a sought-after tourism destination, the Wellington valley has become extremely popular for its attractive wedding and conference venues.
